Rain, Rain don’t go away

via Daily Prompt: Radiate

Rain is my ray of sunshine. It has never failed to make me happy. My heart dances like a peacock whenever it rains. Even a month long of rain is not enough for me to get tired of it. I am from a rain shadow region and that explains my penchant for it. I get over excited and my friends think that I over react. My mood gets elated and I perform well when it rains. I am a Pluviophile or should I say Ombrophile, if that is not restricted to plants?

English Translation
The water poured to irrigate the paddy runs along the canal
and benefits the grass that grows along the Bund.
If there is a good man living in this world
It will rain on his behalf to benefit all- Avvaiyar)

Whenever it rained I used to wonder on whose behalf it happened that day. In my school days, I irritate my sister quoting this and saying that it rains because of me. Rain and an irritated sibling, Double happiness.

Everything about rain is beautiful. The cool breeze announcing the arrival of the rain, drizzle, petrichor, the colour of the sky, rising ground water level, related vocabulary, the lightning, rolling thunder ( especially near the sea it’s scary and marvellous, it would feel as if the sky is falling down), reading(even text books), sleeping to the sound of the rain, beautiful little mushrooms, rainbow, rejuvenated plants and trees, farmers’ happiness, good harvest and what not. Even floods are beautiful when it doesn’t come in the way of the people ( or are we the one who are in its way, that is a separate topic to discuss).

You know people have succeeded in bottling the scent of petrichor. Interesting, isn’t it? Check out these sites for more details.

It is unimaginably hot here. Many states have been declared drought- hit. A good monsoon, at this time, would be a ray of sunlight for us.

Some say peacocks dance before the rain, thus making a weather forecast. Science says it’s a mating call and peacock dancing in rain is just a coincidence. I even found an interesting theory while browsing. According to that, in addition to the of a peahen, peacock’s Dance attracts predators too. But those predators don’t come out in rain so this species of Aves choose rain as the perfect time to carry out the mating. I have seen peacock dancing before it rains and even when there is no chance of raining too. I am so lucky to have seen it so many times

Petrichor- the smell of rain on dry earth.

It comes from the Greek “petra” which means stone and “ichor” which means “the fluid that flows in the veins of the gods in Greek mythology.”

Pluviophile- a lover of rain; someone who finds joy and peace of mind during rainy days. Derived from Latin Pluvial-related to rain, Phile- Like.

Ombrophile- Plants that grow well in rain

A psekaphile would be one who likes drizzling rain and an hyetophile one who likes the rain in general
